Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has approved the increase of funding under the Ministry of Defense’s Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme to Rs 50 crore per project from Rs 10 crore. The TDF programme, executed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), supports the local development of components, products, systems and technologies by MSMEs and start-ups.

It should be recalled that 25% of the defense R&D budget was reserved for private industry, start-ups and universities in the Union budget 2022-23. The increased funding is in line with the budget announcement and will give further impetus to the vision of “Aatmanirbharta in Defence”.

The TDF program aims to give a major boost to the defense manufacturing sector by encouraging the industry to innovate and develop defense technologies to put India on the path to self-reliance. The program covers up to 90% of the total project cost and allows industry to work in consortium with another industry/university. With this increased funding, industry and startups will be able to develop more complex technologies for existing and future weapon systems and platforms. To date, 56 projects have been sanctioned under the TDF program.
