The program is transformative in nature and priority is given to nominated candidates. Applicants must be 40 years of age or younger. The program[1] allows nGAP appointments to benefit from teaching and research development opportunities and requires the holder to register for their doctoral or postdoctoral studies.

Job description:

In line with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s Next Generation Academic Program (nGAP)[2], the Faculty of Education at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to recruit a Lecturer. We are looking for an exceptionally motivated, qualified and ambitious South African aspiring scholar to contribute to and develop the current teaching and research interests/specializations of the Faculty. The Faculty of Education is establishing a Center for Advanced Learning Technologies in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (CALTSTEAM). The Faculty invites applications for the academic position of Lecturer in CALTSTEAM and Science Education. We are looking for someone with excellent academic credentials in teaching and research in this area. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to Center projects, including administrative duties, and teach undergraduate and postgraduate science education modules. One of the main strategic axes of the department is the use of virtual and augmented reality in STEM education. The candidate is expected to have expertise in this area.


  • Enroll in the Doctorate in Science Education;
  • Involvement in research at the Center and limited teaching in science education (contact, blended and online) at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Prepare/design and mark assignments, tests and exams.
  • Be prepared to travel between campuses when needed.
  • Attend departmental and faculty meetings.
  • Establish their research niche within the Center and participate in research activities leading to the publication of articles in peer-reviewed/accredited international journals.
  • Supervise postgraduate students.
  • Actively participate in and perform any other task or activity pertaining to the general operation of the Center, and provide assistance in the general operations of equipment and facilities.
  • Driving the University of Johannesburg Global Excellence and Stature (GES) goals
  • Participate in Faculty community engagement initiatives.

The duration of the nGAP program is 6 years. nGAP positions are institutional and are permanent positions. Additionally, nGAP lecturers are required to participate in the South African Universities Development Program (SSAU-DP)

Minimum requirements

  • An MEd in science education is required (70% pass or above).
  • Ability to perform research, teaching and administration simultaneously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Excellent computer skills.


  • Previous teaching experience (provide a teaching portfolio if possible) in science education will be an added advantage.
  • Strong commitment to quality teaching and research.
  • Experience with Blackboard (or related online education platform) and blended learning.
  • Experience in using virtual and augmented reality applications for education.
  • Ability to perform research, teaching and administration simultaneously.
  • Scientific article(s) published in accredited specialized journals.
  • Postgraduate supervisory experience.
