This research was conducted by a group of interdisciplinary researchers led by Dr Tingirikari Jagan Mohan Rao, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology, NIT Andhra Pradesh.

The published article was co-authored by a researcher, Ms. Akriti Tirkey, PhD., Mizoram University, with Dr. Punuri Jayasekhar Babu, Assistant Professor, Biomaterials and Bioengineering Research Laboratory, Department of Biotechnology, College Pachhunga Academic, Mizoram University.

What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is an emerging field of research as its application is growing day by day in various sectors including food and agriculture due to its vast physical, chemical and biological properties which are functionalized with various biomolecules to improve the properties of the packaging and storage materials. .

Additionally, nanomaterials in the form of sensors can be used to maintain temperature, detect pathogens, pesticides, toxins and other chemicals in packaged foods.

  • Dr Tingirikari Jagan Mohan Rao said, “The research emphasizes the role of nanoparticles in providing mechanical stability to packaging material and shows how nanosensors can be developed to detect pathogens, contamination, pesticides and allergens and improve the antimicrobial properties of the packaging material. to prevent spoilage and contamination of food.
  • Other research carried out also includes a discourse on the role of various government agencies in addressing safety concerns, providing legislation and regulations on the use and application of nanomaterials.
  • Research highlights how bio-based polymers can be blended with nanoparticles to make more efficient and effective packaging materials.
  • The research also explained how trust can be built among consumers by maintaining transparency in the assessment of the effects of nanoparticles on humans and the environment and highlighted how researchers and industries should develop products that can. easily be accepted by the public.
